Rajasthan Royals (Hindi: राजस्थान रॉयल्स) is a franchise cricket team based in Jaipur, India that plays in the IPL. The team represents the city of Jaipur which is the capital of Rajasthan. The team is captained by Shane Warne for all the seasons. The team's mascot is a Lion named Moochu Singh [3]. The team anthem, 'Halla Bol' is sung by Ila Arun[3]. They became the champions of the inaugural IPL tournament in 2008. The IPL had terminated the agreement with Rajasthan Royals on 10th October 2010 along with Kings XI Punjab for violations in agreement and breach of contract on the part of the franchise. This decision was challenged by the respective teams and BCCI lost court cases against the Royals and decided to stop legal action and allowed them to participate in IPL. 2011 along with Kings XI Punjab.
Franchise History

The Rajasthan Royals franchise is owned and chaired by Manoj Badale. Other investors include Lachlan Murdoch, Aditya S Chellaram and Suresh Chellaram. The Group acquired the franchise for $67 million. Incidentally, this was the least expensive franchise in the Indian Premier League and probably the least fancied team in the league at the beginning of the tournament. Bollywood actress and Celebrity Big Brother winner Shilpa Shetty and her business partner (now husband) Raj Kundra paid approximately US $15.4 million for a 11.7% stake before the start of IPL 2 in early 2009, therefore valuing the team at $130 million.[5]

It made a pre-tax profit of $7.5 million in 2009. [1]
[edit]
2008 IPL Season

Prior to the start of the inaugural IPL season, many considered the Royals as possibly the weakest team in the IPL, giving them little chance of competing well in the tournament.[6] Evidence of the latter opinion seemed to be confirmed when the team lost its first match against the Delhi Daredevils in a 9 wicket loss.[7] However the Royals won their next game by defeating the Kings XI Punjab and continued to win the next five games in a row. The Royals built up an impressive 11-3 record after their fourteen premilinary round matches; this included a consecutive 5-game and 6-game winning streak with an undefeated record on their home ground and a spot at the top of the points table. They were also the first team to book a place in the semifinals with their 65 run win over the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Shane Warne's captaincy and simultaneous coaching was praised and well received by everyone,[8][9] including opposition teams.[10] In addition, many players of the Royals team had consistently played well. The Royals secured a place in the finals with a victory against the Delhi Daredevils.

The Rajasthan Royals became the winner of the first IPL tournament, when they defeated the Chennai Super Kings by 3 wickets in the final played on 1 June 2008. With the scores level with one ball remaining, Sohail Tanvir scored the winning run and therefore prevented the match from being decided on a bowl out.[11]

Each player and representative on the team was awarded a medal and the team was presented with the DLF Indian Premier League trophy along with a cheque for US$ 1.2 million prize money. Many of the Royals' players also took home individual awards for their performance during the tournament; Yusuf Pathan claimed the Man of the Match award for the final match, Sohail Tanvir finished the tournament in possession of the Purple Cap (the IPL's leading wicket taker) and Australian all-rounder Shane Watson was declared the Man of the Series.
[edit]
2009 IPL Season

The Royals did not have a good start during the 2009 season. In their opening game against the Royal Challengers Bangalore, who were second last in 2008, the Royals obtained the lowest score in the tournaments history. Rajasthan started to gain momentum slowly with Yusuf Pathan's explosive performances in victories against Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Daredevils giving hope to the Royals and their fans. However, inconsistency became a major factor; much was expected of South African captain Graeme Smith who was playing in front of his home crowd and who in last season's scored 441 runs, he together with Swapnil Asnodkar were not able to string together strong consistent performances. The absence of previous year's stars Sohail Tanvir and Shane Watson was also a major factor. Tanvir was not eligible in this season due to the political strain between India and Pakistan, and Watson was called up to play for Australia in the series against Pakistan in the UAE. Many also considered the sending of Mohammad Kaif back to India a poor decision as his batting could have contributed to the team's batting performance. The Royals failed to make it to the semifinals after losing their last two matches against Delhi Daredevils and Kolkata Knight Riders.
[edit]
2010 IPL Season

Rajasthan started the season looking to emulate their success in 2008 but suffered a three game losing streak at the start of the tournament. They bounced back well with a four game winning streak but they were knocked out after a defeat against the Kolkata Knight Riders in their final game of the third season of the IPL.

Players

Rajasthan Royals were the least active franchise during the players auction. The team didn't have a designated icon player, which saved a lot of cap space for the franchise. However the franchise was surprisingly low key during the auction, and in the end got penalized by the IPL committee for failing to meet the minimum bidding criteria of $3.3 million.[13] The highest bid by Rajasthan Royals was for the Indian middle order batsman Mohammad Kaif, who came off the board at $675,000. Shane Warne was named the coach and the captain of the side. The Royals were unique during the 2008 season as they were the only side to have an English cricketer in their squad, Hampshire's all rounder Dimitri Mascarenhas who only played one match, against the Delhi Daredevils in Jaipur on 11 May, before returning back to England. The Rajasthan Royals also selected Justin Langer and Morne Morkel in the player auction, but both declined to instead play county cricket.[14][15] In 2009 Season the team has cut down six Indian players from the previous years squad. They are batsman Mohammad Kaif and other relatively unknowns Dinesh Salunkhe, Anup Revandkar, Srideep Mangela, Ashraf Makda and Azhar Malik.[16]Rajasthan Royals Rosterview · talk · edit

Expulsion From the IPL & Return (2010)

The BCCI decided to expel Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals from the IPL. The expulsion baffled captain Shane Warne who stated that he suspected that their might be some foul play and that the BCCI might possess some ulterior motives. [17] The Rajasthan Royals have however filed an appeal against the decision and the two parties will go to the Mumbai High Court to decide [18] The Mumbai high-court adjourned that case until 29th October 2010. [19] Both parties then agreed to adjourn the case again to November 15th because they didn't want it to coincide with diwali celebrations from November 1 to 14 [20] Later it was announced by the Royals that they told the Bombay High court that they would be negotiating with an arbitrator to see if they could reconcile with the IPL [21] The artibrator announced that while the investigation was ongoing the Royals would remain apart of the IPL for six-weeks and the BCCI would not be allowed to change rules which might go against the Royals. The six-week period included the player auction in which it's expected that the Royals will participate [22] After this the Bombay High Court rejected the appeals of the BCCI against keeping the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL for six-weeks while the case was sorted out. [23] It was estimated because of the losses in court cases and damaging reputation the BCCI decided not to pursue any further legal action against Royals' or Kings XI Punjab and announced they decided to keep them in the IPL [24] The Royals announced that they had retained Shane Watson and Shane Warne before they go into the auction [25]

DECCAN CHARGERS ANTHEM-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XoqVtuXbiII
Deccan Chargers (Telugu: డెక్కన్ చార్జర్స్; Urdu: دکن چارجرز) known in short as DC or 'Chargers' is a cricket franchise that represents the city of Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League.[1] They won the Second season held in South Africa in 2009. For season 4 of the IPL the team was led by Kumar Sangakkara first and later by Cameron White and coached by Darren Lehmann, former Australian Test and One-Day Cricketer.

They finished last in the inaugural season of the IPL, and as the champions in the next season.
Franchise history

The Deccan Chargers franchise is owned by the Deccan Chronicle corporation. The media group acquired the franchise for an amount of USD 107 million on 24 January 2008. Later, another media group, Group M India picked up a 20% stake in the franchise.[2]

The team's name reflects the association with the Deccan Chronicle newspaper, which in turn derives its name from the Deccan plateau that makes up the majority of the southern portion of the Indian peninsula.

The Chargers logo is a charging bull.[3] From the 2009 season, the team changed the colour of the jersey (from beige and black to sparkling silver and blue) and the logo (from gold and red to white and blue).

There is no Icon Player for the team as the former captain V.V.S. Laxman rejected the offer to be an icon player in order to free funds and enable the franchise to buy & encourage younger players.

There were reports suggesting a buyout of the franchise by Gujarat based Adani Group for a sum of $300 million, almost three times the value the team was purchased for initially.

Players

The franchise initially acquired star players Adam Gilchrist, Andrew Symonds, Shahid Afridi, Scott Styris and Herschelle Gibbs. The main bowlers purchased by the franchise were R.P. Singh, Nuwan Zoysa, and Chaminda Vaas. The other Indian players are Rohit Sharma, Venugopal Rao.
[edit]
Performance

Despite the fact that the team was one of the favourites to win the inaugural edition of the IPL, the team failed to reach the semi-finals. Andrew Symonds, who was Deccan's most expensive player, batted only 3 innings before leaving to play for the Australian national team. In addition, the team captain V.V.S. Laxman had an injury which ended his season after 6 games. Only three bowlers R. P. Singh, Pragyan Ojha and Shahid Afridi took more than 4 wickets in the competition. In this 14 match period, the team went winless at home and only managed 2 wins overall, one against the Mumbai Indians and one against the Chennai Super Kings and as a result they finished at the bottom of the table.

New administration and support staff

After the debacle of 2008, the team management sacked the entire administration associated with the tournament in that year. They removed their CEO J.Kalyankrishnan, Coach Robin Singh and the Captain V.V.S.Laxman and replaced them with Tim Wright, the former Australian batsman Darren Lehmann and former Australian Wicket-Keeper Adam Gilchrist respectively. Many new players were taken from domestic circuit and also few new international players were signed. The 2008 sponsor Jaypee Group withdrew its sponsorship due to the 2008 debacle. After this, Deccan chargers went through a complete makeover from the previous season, colors of the team were changed from pale brown to vibrant blue, the logo was changed to display a more vibrant charging bull and Deccan Chronicle became the primary sponsor for the team.

[edit]
Tradings

In low key trading of players, the Deccan Chargers management had placed Shahid Afridi and Herschelle Gibbs up for sale, a direct result of their below par performance during the 2008 season. However, no franchise owners were interested in purchasing these two players. Later, the Deccan Chargers management severed all ties with Shahid Afridi, due to his disagreement with former Deccan Chargers captain V.V.S.Laxman. Also, Former India all-rounder Sanjay Bangar was transferred to the Kolkata Knight Riders.
[edit]
New signings

Before the second player auction took place the management signed Queensland all-rounder Ryan Harris owing to a strong recommendation from Coach Darren Lehmann. In the resulting auction the Deccan Chargers franchise acquired two West Indian players, Fidel Edwards for a fee of $150,000, and Dwayne Smith for $100,000. Seven new domestic players were also signed up; Tirumalasetti Suman and Abhinav Kumar who are batsmen, bowler Shoaib Maqsusi from the Hyderabad team signed after their consistent performances on the domestic circuit. Baroda batsman Azhar Bilakhia and two fast bowlers from Punjab, Jaskarandeep Singh and Harmeet Singh.
[edit]
Performance

With the below-par performance in the inaugural season and finishing at the bottom, Deccan staged an inspired comeback in 2009 by winning the second IPL season. After having an undefeated run in the initial league stage, the team suffered minor setbacks by losing some close matches. But the return of Andrew Symonds, Rohit Sharma regaining form and the continuing exuberance of captain Adam Gilchrist bolstered the side. Some luck came in Deccan's way, towards the end of the league stage, with Kings Punjab and Rajasthan Royals losing key matches, enabling the Chargers into the semi-finals. During the semi-finals against the Delhi Daredevils, who were at the top of the table, few gave the Chargers a chance of an outside win. But against the odds, Gilchrist scored a sensational 85 off just 35 balls to put the Daredevils out of the competition and give the Chargers their first IPL final against the Royal Challengers Bangalore.

In the final match, Gilchrist got out for a duck in the first over, however the Chargers managed to recover and posted a total of 143 for the loss of 6 wickets. Many felt that a good defending total could have been a further 20-30 runs. The Chargers came out with all guns blazing right from the first ball, and this spirited effort ensured that they successfully defended the total, winning the game by 6 runs and lifting the prized IPL trophy.

CHENNAI SUPER KINGS

INTRODUCTION-Chennai Super Kings (Tamil: சென்னை சூப்பர் கிங்ஸ் (often abbreviated as CSK) is a franchise cricket team based in Chennai that plays in the Indian Premier League. The team is captained by Mahendra Singh Dhoni and coached by Stephen Fleming. The M. A. Chidambaram Stadium (often referred to as Chepauk) is the Super Kings' home ground. They are the current holders of the IPL trophy, having won the 2010 Indian Premier League. They were the runners-up of the inaugural season and semi-finalists of the second edition and are the only side to make it to the semi-finals in all the three editions of the tournament. The Super Kings have qualified for two Champions League tournaments, firstly the 2008 edition, although the tournament was subsequently cancelled, and the 2010 tournament of which they became Champions. The leading run-scorer of the side is Suresh Raina[1] while the leading wicket-taker is Albie Morkel.[2]

History

The Chennai SuperKings are a part of the Indian Premier League, made up of 10 teams. The franchise is currently owned by India Cements, who paid US$91 million to acquire the rights to the franchise for 10 years in 2008.[3] N. Srinivasan, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of India Cements Ltd., is the de facto owner of the Chennai Super Kings, by means of his position within the company. He is also the Secretary of the BCCI.

Krishnamachari Srikkanth, former captain of the Indian cricket team and the current chairman of the National Selection Committee, is the brand ambassador for the franchise at present, and former Indian opener V. B. Chandrasekhar is the Chief Selector. To gather more support from local fans, actor Joseph Vijay and actress Nayantara were also appointed as ambassadors. Nayantara was later removed because she could not attend matches. Vijay served as the brand Ambassador till the end of the 2009 season and has been removed after that.

During the first player auctions for the inaugural IPL season, conducted in January 2008, the Chennai team was able to buy a number of contemporary star cricketers such as Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Matthew Hayden and Michael Hussey. The Super Kings had a solid start to the tournament by winning their first game against Kings XI Punjab scoring 240/5 which was the highest total of the tournament, a record surpassed by themselves in 2010.[4] The Super Kings also won their next three games against Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore. But their winning run in the tournament took a hit when their overseas stars Matthew Hayden, Michael Hussey and Jacob Oram had to leave for national duties. Their departure immediately affected their performance as the Super Kings who had won their first four games lost their next three games. The batting, although inconsistent, eventually adjusted to the losses of Hayden and Hussey with contributions from Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Suresh Raina and Albie Morkel. The Super Kings despite having a roller-coaster ride in the second half managed to ensure a semi-final slot by beating the Deccan Chargers in their last league fixture.[5]

The side had finished third at the league table with 16 points. The Chennai Super Kings played their first semi-final against the Kings XI Punjab whom they managed to defeat by 9 wickets, thus entering the final,[6] which they lost to Rajasthan Royals by three wickets off the last ball.[7]

The Super Kings brought English all-rounder Andrew Flintoff for $1.55 million making him the highest-paid IPL cricketer along with Kevin Pietersen of Royal Challengers Bangalore. Apart from Flintoff the Chennai Super Kings also brought Thilan Thushara, George Bailey, Murali Vijay and Shadab Jakati.

The Chennai Super Kings were defeated in their first game of the tournament by the Mumbai Indians.[8] But they immediately bounced back by beating the Royal Challengers Bangalore in their next game. The Super Kings however lost against the Delhi Daredevils and Deccan Chargers with an abandoned game in between. But the Chennai Super Kings went on to win their next 5 consecutive games to get 13 points from 10 games. The Super Kings despite losing to Royal Challengers and Kolkata Knight Riders assured themselves a semi-final berth by beating the Mumbai Indians and the Kings XI Punjab.[9]

The Super Kings finished with 17 points and earned a second place at the league table. However at the semi-finals the Super Kings' hope of entering the final for a second time was crushed by the resurgent Royal Challengers who proceeded to play the final against the Deccan Chargers.[10]

The Super Kings added Justin Kemp and Thissara Perera to their roster, one filling an empty slot while the other shall serve as a substitute to Andrew Flintoff, who has planned to skip that season. The Super Kings also roped in former ICL cricketer Hemang Badani and local all-rounder Ganapathy.

The Super Kings started their tournament against the defending champions, Deccan Chargers, which they lost by 31 runs. But they bounced back into the top 4 by beating the Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Daredevils. However the side witnessed a heap of defeats in their next 4 games terribly endangering their chances to the semi-finals. But the Chennai Super Kings made a decent comeback by winning their eighth and ninth games against the Royal Challengers and Rajasthan Royals with the help of two superb batting performances from Murali Vijay. His performance was supplemented by the arrival of Doug Bollinger who boosted the team's bowling attack significantly.[11] The Super Kings managed to win 5 of the matches played in the latter half of the season thanks to the superb bowling performance of Ravichandran Ashwin, boosting their Net Run Rate, and allowed them to qualify for the semi-finals as three other teams were tied on the same number of points.[12]

The Super Kings defeated the Deccan Chargers at the semi-final to qualify for their second IPL final.[13] The win also assured them a place in the Champions League Twenty20. At the IPL final the Chennai Super Kings played the Mumbai Indians and won by 22 runs to crown themselves the Champions of the tournament.[14]

Name

Fearless rulers have been an intrisic part of Tamil History. The reign of the Chera, Chola, Pandya and Pallava dynasties represented the Golden era of Tamil Culture. The kings from their dynasties, fearless warriors in their own right have fought long and hard to establish the supremacy of Tamil rule and expand the Tamil kingdom within the subcontinent and abroad. It is from this rich heritage, that the name Chennai Super Kings draws inspiration. It is only natural that the modern day warriors in the sporting arena would try and replicate the exploits of their ancestors. The addition of the word Super gives the name a young and contemporary feel, which is in keeping with the game format. The 20 twenty as a cricketing format is all about enhanced drama and speed. The format has no scope for half measures, or anything less than a full-spirited war. In a similar fashion, given the mind space that the word "Super" occupies in the Tamil imagination, it enhances the qualities of the word it is prefixed to. Super Kings then is not just about royalty, but about absolute monarchy.
Logo

The logo is inspired by popular folk-lore which holds that the lion is the king of the jungle. It is therefore a logical extension to use the same for the lords of the pitch as well!. The illustration of the lion using a minimalist style offers a sense of youth and vibrancy. This is complemented by the heavier lettering for Chennai Super Kings representing solid and sturdy performance orientation. The team colours are yellow and blue. Yellow stands for the fiery spirit that burns in the team's belly. The constant urge to keep the fire of Tamil spirt burning. Blue represents infinity, as one of the oldest cultures in the world and yet, is also one of the most forward looking. The team will only have to seek within to reach dizzying heights of success.

Cricket academy in Chennai

Matthew Hayden has planned to set up a youth academy in Chennai and wants to take the help of Rahul Dravid and his Super Kings coach Stephen Fleming in the venture.[23]

Hayden said he had decided to give back to the city where he had practiced playing on turning tracks ten years ago on Australia's 2000-01 tour to India."About a decade back, when I came here to practise on turning tracks, I told myself standing in an empty Chepauk stadium that I would score a century for Australia one day," Hayden told the Times of India. "I did that, and now this is a way of giving something back to the city from where I have got so much."[23]

2008 IPL Season
[edit]
Performance

The tournament got off to a slow start for the Kings XI, with the team losing their first two games. However, despite losing Australians Brett Lee and Simon Katich (who were committed to tour the West Indies with Australia), the team found its groove. Powered by their balanced bowling lineup[1] and effective top order[2], the team won 9 of its next 10 matches, clinching a birth in the semi-final. In the semi-final, their run in the tournament came to an end with a comprehensive 9 wicket loss to the Chennai Super Kings.

Many credit the team for unearthing arguably the biggest find of the tournament in Shaun Marsh.[3][4] The opener from Western Australia was looked over in both IPL player auctions and was signed by the franchise on 9 April.[5] He finished the tournament the highest run scorer with an average of 68.44 and a strike rate of 139.68 in 11 innings. His innings included 1 century and 5 half-centuries.[6]
[edit]
Racism Row

On top of their strong results, the franchise found itself in the headlines for issues off the field as well. It was alleged that cheerleaders Ellesha Newton and Sherinne Anderson—both of whom are of African lineage—were denied access to the PCA Stadium due to the colour of their skin. Wizcraft International Entertainment, the event management firm hired by the team, denied the allegation and began proceedings on a defamation lawsuit against the organization who represented the two individuals.[7]
[edit]
Dispute with Punjab Police

The Punjab Police sought compensation in exchange for providing security during IPL matches at the PCA Stadium. The issue was that neither the Punjab Cricket Association, nor the franchise owners were willing to pay the amount being demanded.[8] The dispute reached a boiling point on 23 May during the Kings XI match against the Deccan Chargers, where it was alleged that team co-owner Ness Wadia was engaged in a verbal dispute with Mohali Senior Superintendent of Police, RS Khatra.[9] Wadia eventually filed an official complaint against Khatra, contending that he was accused of stealing alcohol and team merchandise, as well as granting entrance to unauthorized personnel in the stadium.[9] Following this event, the Punjab Police threatened to provide no security for the Kings XI's final home match, unless they were paid the sum they demanded.
[edit]
2009 season

Finishing as semi-finalists last year, The Kings XI Punjab started with enormous ambitions to win the trophy. Their ambitions were supported by their new sponsors Emirates Airlines. With two available slots to fill The Punjab Kings made bids on Jerome Taylor and Yusuf Abdulla at the second IPL auctions.

The team took a hit as most of their Australian cricketers were not available. The team's pace department did not have much fire in them after Jerome Taylor backed out at the last minute with a fresh injury.

The Punjab Kings started badly losing to the Delhi Daredevils and the Kolkata Knight Riders, however got back to form by beating the Royal Challengers, Rajasthan Royals and the Mumbai Indians. Then the team witnessed a roller-coaster ride in their next eight matches with 4 wins and 4 losses. The team's semi-final hopes were crushed after losing to the Chennai Super Kings in their last match.
[edit]
2010 season

Kings XI Punjab lost six matches to Kolkata Knight Riders, Delhi Daredevils, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Deccan Chargers, Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians but managed to win a match against Chennai Super Kings when the scores were level and the match went to a Super Over. Kings XI Punjab were boosted by the return of Brett Lee against Kolkata, but he was not at his best. Shaun Marsh returned in the match against Mumbai Indians. Despite of his good performance, which included a half century, the team lost the match.

They ended in last position.

Expulsion From the IPL and return

Following the controversy surrounding the BCCI and Lalit Modi the Indian Premier League announced that it had terminated the franchise contracts of Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals. It also sent a notice to the Kochi IPL Team to sort out its finances or face termination. The teams announced that they would take whatever legal action possible to remain in the Indian Premier League [10] Initially the team tried to negotiate a solution with the league but when that couldn't be reached they decided to file a case in Mumbai High Court accusing the IPL off getting rid of two teams so that when the bidding process starts for the 2012 IPL season the contract would be given to a more lucrative bidder [11]

A division bench of Hon. High Court of Mumbai has upheld the injunction order passed on by Hon. Justice Vajifdar of Mumbai High court. This order stays till the arbitrator, chosen by mutual consent of BCCI and Kings XI Punjab settles the issue. The team is allowed to take part in the player's auction to be held on 8th & 9th of january post fulfillment of certain financial clauses imposed by Hon. Justice Vajifdar. The participation of Kings XI Punjab looks a virtual certainty for IPL 2011. [12] And became even more certain when they bought a full-strentgh team with Michael Bevan as coach and Adam Gilchrist appointed as captain .
